Do You Have Roots?

Do you have roots where you live? I was born in Warren, Pennsylvania. I´ve lived in Mercer, Pennsylvania, Grove City Pennsylvania, Derby Kansas, Hutchinson Kansas, Bedford Texas, San Antonio Texas, Austin Texas, Pratt Kansas, Averøy Norway, and now Helgøya Norway.
I don´t feel I have any roots....anywhere. There is a little of me in every place I´ve lived. My roots have never had any garden to grow in which might be the reason I don´t feel I´ve come as far in life as some people around me. Sometimes I feel jealous of people who have been in one place all their life and know everyone within 20 kilometers of their home place.
Other times I think moving around a lot in my life has made me much more accepting of different people, different ways to think, different ways to do things. I think living in so many different places all my life has really helped me as an expat living overseas. It´s given me the qualities I needed to make it in a place that wasn´t my HOME. Qualities such as, positivity, perseverance, adaptability, and an accepting nature that respects the differences between us all and doesn´t make me feel that there is only one way things should be and that´s it!
It´s very cliché to say this but HOME truly is where your loved ones are. (Like this guy) I´ve learned that a potted plant that can be moved from place to place can be just as lovely as any permanent garden....so you, in essence, can take your roots with you! Then again, you all probably knew things like this...it´s just me who is slowly being enlightened right?? ;-) So where do you have your roots?
Made a turkey for our New Year dinner. It was DE-LICIOUS and that´s all there is to say about that one....*slurp*

The New Year is starting off pretty darn good....hope it´s going well for you also! Did you make any New Year resolutions you actually plan to keep this year??

Until next time my friends....

I'm like you, Amy. Moved around a lot, lost touch with a lot of people, don't feel like I really belong anywhere.

I have a friend who's lived in the same small town all her life, and, to be honest, sometimes I'm a little jealous of her, but most of the time I realize that I've really benefited from all that moving. I can go anywhere and settle in. That's a skill that doesn't always come easily.

Happy New Year!

I really don't have roots. I was a military brat and then married into the military. I sometimes envy people who have lived the same place their whole lives, but for me it would have to be a place that I liked. Hopefully my husband will retire in a few years and we can move someplace of our choosing so that we can put down some roots for our children.

I am a German living in the US now. I have lived all over Europe and different places in the States. Right now we are living in Texas. I feel the same way you do, I feel like I don't have roots and I sometimes envy People who never left their hometown. But then again I have had so many adventures and my kids really profited from this lifestyle, they are happy and very curious adults now who live their own adventures now! I really do think roots are where your family is.....
Greetings from Texas,
Susanne

Loved the blog. I wish I had moved around more in my life but alas I am firmly planted where I have been for the last 38+ years. I have traveled but like Dorothy said "there's no place like home" And your idea of home is where the heart (family) is is just as good. IF (the biggest little word in the English language) I were younger, my mother was not living nearby or children I would move to some nice rural area. I seriously dislike the "burbs" much too busy and now seems much less friendly than the small towns and burgs ....
Also I never felt like I had roots since when I was a child the family moved from WI to CA and there was only one old maid great aunt living nearby, deprived of aunts, uncles and cousins and grandparents (they did visit but not often enough for me)

I don't have any roots either... I guess our roots are the pockets of courage we have within us and the people we love.

I guess I could say that I've had one foot in both worlds--for the 15 years following college my husband and I were on a track where we moved every 2-4 years. It was challenging but wonderful too. We saw things and experienced things that I will never regret. We became closer as a couple and made wonderful friends.

Three years ago we moved back to my hometown and the transition was surprisingly harder than I anticipated! Our kids love it here and my parents love having grandchildren in town... I'm not sure we'll be here forever, but for now, it's nice to settle down and let some roots grow under our feet.

But in the end, I've always believed that Home is Where the Heart is...

Growing up, I moved 5 times in 6 years... and went to 5 different elementary schools in 5 different towns in 5 VERY different regions of Texas... all before I got to the 6th grade.
However, I still feel that I am "from Nederland, Texas" because that is where my grandparents remained for all of their lives and it is where I would go to "go home".....

But now I have new roots.... in some Danish soil. :-)
