Christmas Story

We’re home now from our little get away in Sweden yesterday and while our goal was shopping for the kids it was also our first trip alone with the children staying at home to watch themselves and the dogs. I was needless to say a tad worried. Not really for the kids, because they are smart and have proven themselves responsible when we’ve left them for several hours before, but not only were they going to have to watch themselves but six dogs!!! It’s a LOT of responsibility- but I’m so proud to say they did great and everything looked wonderful when we got home! I was so proud and SO HAPPY to see them! I loved being with Stig, but I sure missed the kids…they are my buddies and as I said to Stig, I know I have to start slowly weaning myself from having them around all the time, someday they will move on and Stig will be out at sea working and I’ll have to deal with life on my own *sigh*….I’m sure I’ll be fine but it’s going to be a real adjustment that is for sure.

We found a couple gifts to give all three of the kids together but when looking for individual gifts we were both left scratching our heads, would the clothing fit, would they like it, is it what they need? So we called them from Sweden and asked them if we could bring them back to Sweden after the new year and take advantage of the after Christmas sales and allow them to get some things then that THEY would like and would fit them. This was completely fine for them and they are already looking forward to the shopping trip in Sweden!!

Stocking stuffers were bought and enough food to hold us for quite some time- it’s so easy to go nutty with all the “cheap” stores in Sweden, however it’s really meat and a few other things that are cheap, but they have things we don’t have in Norway and that is always exciting!!

One thing we bought was the film A Christmas Story. Which I believe is originally a Finnish movie. The DVD we bought did not have English language but English text. It had the Scandinavian languages though and we watched it in Norwegian. It’s by no means an Oscar winning type film, but definitely sweet and appropriate for the holidays. A special film about how a young boy becomes Santa Claus and begins the legacy of our most beloved holiday icon. The landscape was gorgeous in the movie and I was envious of all the snow, it really is special with LOTS of snow at Christmas- whether you’re completely sure you don’t like snow or not, snow at Christmas is a must and completely romantic and idealic…we have gotten some snow which I’ll try and photograph tomorrow. I’m also going to try and begin some baking, I found candy canes in Sweden which I plan to crush and mix with melted white chocolate then let firm up and break into peppermint/white chocolate pieces of candy. Only one more day of work and then Christmas vacation!! Hark the herald angels sing……….

Until next time my friends….

Lovely to read about everyone's holiday doings. Maybe you should post that candycane recipe. Williams Sonoma makes a wonderful 'peppermint bark' but at $25 or more a tin, it's outrageously expensive.

Amy, I truly missed you. Great to hear your Sweden adventure. While I was reading, I can't help but feel envious that you get to hop from one country to another just to go shopping.

I was thinking the same thing about my boys who are also my buddies. I always tell them (just a joke of course) not to get married anymore. Their constant reply: "mom, how will you have grandchildren if we don't marry?" My constant reply: "I don't want to be a grandma." Hahaha!

Have a lovely weekend Amy! Big hugs from Manila.

Ah - lovely! Sounds like a good day and well done kids for taking such good care of home and dogs...

Another yummy thing you can do is to crush the candy canes and mix with vanilla ice cream. Then put the ice cream between two gingerbread cookie so that you have a sandwich.

I did that one year at Christmas - delicious!

Where do you come shopping in Sweden? Is it nearish Stockholm?
