So I found this movie for 79 kroner and thought I was getting a great deal. 79 kroner for a movie in Norway is cheap..that would be about 14.50 US dollars. There was rave reviews plastered all over the cover and the story line sounded great..a young energetic couple who have bought into suburbian life in Connecticut but decide to break away and follow their dream but can they do this without risking their relationship. Sounds good huh? It wasn’t…..
Pulp Fiction also got tons of great reviews and the critics LOVED that film and I was left scratching my head in bewilderment after watching it..I didn’t get it. I didn’t get this film either.
Leonardo Di Caprio plays a 30 year old who works at the same boring job as his dad and feels his life has been wasted. He has a gorgeous wife played by the talented Kate Winslet, who is a failed actress who submits to being a common suburbian mother taking care of the home and kids while her husband works. To the outside world they look like a couple who have it all together and are totally in love, though you quickly realize their marriage isn’t all that great when Di Caprio’s character cheats on his wife with his secretary who reminds me of Betty Boop then comes home to a birthday cake with candles and the whole package and a singing adoring wife and kids. Then Winslet suggests later that evening that they sell everything and move to Paris where Di Caprio apparently had a fantastic adventure when he was in the service. There she can work making tons of money as a secretary for the US Government while he finds out who he is and who he is suppose to be. They both jump on the idea and decide they’ll give it a go. Everyone reacts with shock and maybe a bit of jealousy at their plans and Winslet and Di Caprio’s characters seem more in love then ever. Then BAM…Winslet’s character is pregnant with baby number three and she immediately goes into a panic stricken state and suggests abortion so that they don’t have to give up their plans to move to Paris. Di Caprio is unsure but they have two weeks to decide before it becomes unsafe to take an abortion (something she plans to do on herself with some rubber do hicky) In those two weeks Di Caprio gets a promotion at work and screws the Betty Boop secretary once again..and starts to get cold feet about going to Paris. When Winslet’s character understands this she goes off the deep end and begins to loathe and hate her husband, sleeps with the freaky neighbour dude who openly claims his love for her after they do it and she just tells him to be quiet for a second…hahahaha..uff…then Di Caprio admits his affair to her and she tells him he can do whoever he wants, she doesn’t love him anymore and he freaks out about this and they have this big fight and he yells that he wishes she had taken that abortion after all…something she hadn’t done in the safe period…after a big blow up fight where he chases her and then leaves her to herself he wakes up and comes downstairs the next day to a “Stepford Wife” type wife who makes him breakfast, pleasant conversation, and wishes him a great day. Then after she watches him leave she calls her neighbour and makes arrangements that the kids stay with her a bit longer since Winslet’s character is still not feeling well and then she goes upstairs and proceeds to carry out the abortion on her own after the safety date…and then as blood drips from her she calls after help and you see Di Caprio and his neighbour (who was in love with his wife without him knowing it) in the waiting room at the hospital and Di Caprio getting the message that she is dead..and then the next thing you see is the weird neighbour couple chatting with the new owners of the home to Winslet and Di Caprio and talking about how Di Caprio moved to the city and adores his kids and is doing ok. The husband then rushes out of the room and the wife follows and he says he doesn’t want to talk about Winslet and Di Caprio couple anymore and she says ok honey and the movie ends…I MEAN GEEEEEEEZ!! And why did I tell you the whole story? To save you 79 kroner…you’re welcome..
The acting was great I guess, I like Kate Winslet, but Di Caprio reminds me of a guy still in puberty..his voice varies between sounding like a man to sounding like a young boy…The neighbours were just plain ol’ weird and so were the other supporting characters..it was just a weird weird movie…but maybe I just don’t get it??
I’m off to make dinner, chicken taco meatballs and mashed potatoes…
Until next time…

that movie hasn't interested me because it just seems so self involved. or maybe it's me. thanks for the confirmation that I probably wouldn't like it.
WEll can't say that I have seen that movie...thanks for the review..I don't think I will waste my money....sorry you did.....
Snow...I thought for sure it was going to snow today...it most certainly is snowing on the mountains...it's just cold and raining right now.

Have a great week!!!
Sounds like the movie didn't do too well of a job catching the emotions of the book. The book is GREAT, if you're into the heavy stuff. It's a roller coaster of how one fits into society, and what is status, and what is rebellion and I think it is still very relevant. It speaks to the whole "Keeping Up With the Joneses" that we see across cultures, and are you ever really free of expectation? It was a book that left me thinking for several days after I finished it, but it is certainly not happy.
