The kids and I took a walk over by where they are working in the forest by our house. Remember I wasn't sure what they were doing? Then I figured out they were cutting down timber....well, I didn't realize how much they were going to cut down....this is what "my" beautiful woods looks like today....and I do not think they are done...It depresses all of us....well, all of us except Thomas. While we girls were complaining about these people destroying the beautiful nature around us, Thomas sat on the snow looking at us and said, "It's JUST trees!!!" Wasn't a smart move, both his sisters jumped in and tried to get him to understand why it was a sad thing...but he's a ten year old boy...I don't think it sank in.
Tonight I went to my friend's house and picked up my new lambskin that I ordered last fall. Weird to think we bottle fed this little guy last summer...I even have video of that on my cell phone...and here he is on my sofa....hmmm...I know this might crush some and confuse others...how could Amy the animal lover have skins? Well, they were going to the butcher whether I got a skin or not, so they weren't killed solely for their skins, so I figured why not...I love sheep skins and am trying to collect a bunch of them, my dream is to make an L shaped bench in my kitchen around a lovely old table and I want to fill the bench with cushions and skins and pillows and make it so cozy, a place where we can sit and watch the nature (if they don't cut it all down) and enjoy a warm cup of something...so now I have two skins, I'll get one more next month but I just bought a butt load of dog food...so that bill was quite hefty...so I need to wait until next month and then I'll order some more from next fall's selection. My friend told me I could come over in the summer and pick out which lamb I want....ugh...I kinda like the idea of not knowing who I'm getting...keeps it less personal that way. ANYHOOT....I was telling my friend and her husband about these people cutting down all this timber by my house, I said how sad it was and they said it was neccessary. That these trees only live to a certain age then they start to rot?? So they have to cut them and plant new...anyone out there know anything about trees and know if this is true or just something to try and soothe me? My girls and I were questioning why Redwoods and old Maple trees and such can live hundreds of years and I said maybe it's certain types of trees that only live so long??? I don't really know...but it was a small comfort...it made the horrible sight of all that timber easier to handle and knowing they've planted or are going to plant some new trees is also a comfort.
Tomorrow we head to a dog show- wish us luck- I'll let ya know how it goes...
Until then.....have a great Friday night folks!!

Oh, good luck at the dog show...we'll be anxiously awaiting pictures!
I totally sympathize with what you are saying about the timber harvesting.
I just want to say that until you even mentioned it, when I opened this blog, I saw nothing but astounding beauty! I cannot believe this is your view.
Until you mentioned the timber harvesting, it didn't even register in my mind. It just looked normal to me, like a gorgeous winter landscape view.
Just wanted you to know that there's a dearth (I love words) of information here
http://www.ext.vt.edu/resources/4h/virtualforest/modules/timber.html
about the subject. The harvesting of timber is a necessary eyesore, I guess. It really helps forests to stay young and vibrant and producing lots of oxygen.
I know that sounds like a shampoo commercial, but think of it as nature taking its course. It's as it should be. Besides, we need the wood. It's better for the environment to make things from wood rather than man-made materials.
OMG. I'm sorry this is so long! I hope this helped. And have fun at the show!!
Sorry about the change in your lovely woods. Hope the dog show goes well!
Good luck in the dog show!
Sounds like the woods are well-managed with long term sustainability in mind: that means that only the necessary amount is cut down and then new ones are planted again, all the while making sure that the diversity of the species of the woods is protected...
Beautiful snowy pictures! Happy weekend!
At first I thought your new lambskin was a new very hairy dog!
That lambskin is beautiful..... and it is NOT the same as you wearing a fur coat that was made from some Danish MINK farm!! Totally different! So Animal Loving Amy is still the same! :o)
Good luck in the dog show today! Cannot wait to hear/read about it! And Happy Valentines Day!
All trees have a lifespan even if not damaged by insects, disease or weather. If a tree is near it's end or damaged it is best to take it down otherwise it can damage newer growth.
